This qualification is about the maintenance of a chainsaw and cross-cutting trees at ground level. Chainsaws used in aerial and ground work are covered. This work will be carried out in a workshop or a woodland environment. “Routine” in this standard means corrective and preventative maintenance that is carried out daily or at regular intervals by the operator prior to and during work.
Cross-cutting operations will include cross-cutting timber under tension in the form of fallen branches, tops, tree sections, severed uprooted stems, horizontal stems, or any timber in a similar situation.
This describes the cross-cutting of trees or timber into either manageable sections or to a given length and diameter specification, either where trees have been felled (“at stump”), or at a conversion point to where trees or timber have been extracted. Cross-cutting operations are often carried out in conjunction with the snedding or de-limbing process. Timber under low and moderate tension is covered, but not timber under the extreme tensions found in e.g. windblown trees.
The severing of root-plates is excluded. If you are working with chemicals or machinery you need to be appropriately trained or certificated in line with current legislation. This standard is for those using chainsaws.

This qualification is about the directional felling of trees using a chainsaw. The felling technique will be appropriate to tree size, weight, condition and species as well as taking into account guidebar size and weather conditions. This covers both coniferous and broadleaved trees, trees that are upright, trees that are weighted towards and that are weighted against a given felling direction.
If you are working with chemicals or machinery you need to be appropriately trained or certificated in line with current legislation. This standard is for those who carry out felling of trees using a chainsaw.

This standard covers the accessing of trees through climbing (both ladders and using climbing equipment) and by Mobile Elevated Work Platform (MEWP) to carry out rescues in a variety of contexts (pruning operation, cutting, dismantle or rigging).
The aerial rescues include recovery of both conscious and unconscious casualties. When carrying out aerial rescue you must maintain high standards of health and safety at all time for both yourself and the people you will come into contact with. This standard is for those carrying out aerial rescue operations. Your work must conform to all current legislation and codes of practice.

The work will be carried out by operator with significant experience of arboriculture operations and chainsaw operations in a canopy. You will carry out a tree hazard and a ‘working at height’ assessment to determine if the operative is safe to perform the work and to determine the safest and most efficient access method.
This aerial work must be supported by a ground worker with significant experience of aerial treework and rigging techniques. This standard covers the use of rigging for the removal of small tree sections in relation to pruning operations where targets below may pose a significant risk through to the removal of part/whole trees where targets do not allow for free-fall/hand thrown techniques.

0039-21 – City & Guilds Level 2 Certificate of Competence in Felling Small Trees up to 380mm
This course is delivered over four days, and is designed to provide the knowledge and practical skills for a trainee to carry out the felling of forward leaning, upright and slightly backward leaning trees, up to a diameter of 380mm. The training also deals with the processing of felled trees and how to deal with a hung tree (undertaken with hand tools), where one tree has been felled into another tree.
This training course will also provide, the required training for a trainee to undertake the NPTC City and Guild certificate of competence 0039-21, felling small trees up to 380mm.
To attend this course the trainee must have attended the chainsaw maintenance and cross cutting course.
The NPTC assessment will require an additional day if undertaken.

This course is delivered over five days, and is designed to provide the knowledge and practical skills for a trainee to climb open grown trees as well as the use of climbing spikes, leading on to rescue from a tree and standing stem using climbing spikes.
This training course will also provide, the required training for a trainee to undertake the NPTC City and Guild certificate of competence 0039-22, climbing trees and aerial rescue.
This is a stand-alone course and does not require any other previous training for attendance.
The NPTC assessment will require an additional day if undertaken.

This training course will also provide, the required training for a trainee to undertake the NPTC City and Guild certificate of competence 0039-23, chainsaw from a rope and harness.
To attend this course the trainee must have attended the chainsaw maintenance and cross cutting course, felling small trees along with climb trees and perform aerial rescue.
